GOING UPSCALE DOWN UNDER
South Australian Tourism Commission
Initiative: Introduce new luxury properties and tours in South Australia to the travel trade and consumer media network. Partner with airlines and travel providers to create travel packages catering to the affluent market to increase conversion and bookings.
Approach:
- Aggressive cooperative marketing partnerships with high-end trip specialists such as Abercrombie & Kent, Swain Tours, American Express, Air New Zealand
- International and domestic media familiarization trips
- Feature placements in luxury publications
Results:
For the year ending 2012:
- Advertising equivalency of $7.5 million in 2012;
- Feature in Departures magazine
- Cover stories in the travel sections of both the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle
- International coverage with Taste & Travel 16-page story, as well as cover photo (Canada; Winter 2013), and Elle Canada
- A 10% increase in revenue to the state from United States consumers
- More than doubled marketing budget due to cooperative partnerships
- Over 1,500 retail and wholesale consultants trained on luxury product offerings
- Awards: South Australia voted most supportive State Tourism Organization in 2011
